Ingredients
  

Turkey Mixture
  • 1 lb Ground Turkey Can substitute with ground chicken, beef, or tofu.
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil Can substitute with sesame oil.
  • 1 small Onion, diced Shallots are a fine substitute.
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced Fresh is best!
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce Tamari can be used for gluten-free.
  • 1/4 cup Water Broth can enhance flavor.
  • 2 tbsp Brown Sugar Honey or palm sugar can be used.
  • 2 tbsp Rice Vinegar Apple cider vinegar works well too.
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Oil Refined oil can substitute.
  • 1 tbsp Grated Ginger Powdered ginger can be used.
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch Arrowroot is a close alternative.
  • 1/4 cup Cold Water Used for the slurry.
  • 1/2 tsp Red Pepper Flakes Optional, adjust to taste.
For Serving
  • 2 cups Cooked Rice Jasmine, brown, or cauliflower rice.
  • 1/4 cup Green Onions, sliced Cilantro can be used instead.
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Seeds Toasting enhances flavor.

Method
 

Cooking Steps
  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering, about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add 1 small diced onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes until soft and translucent.
  3. Introduce 2 minced garlic cloves to the pan, stirring for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add 1 pound of ground turkey to the skillet, breaking it up into small pieces and cook for 6-7 minutes until fully browned.
  5. Whisk together 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup water, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, and 1 tablespoon sesame oil in a bowl.
  6. Prepare the cornstarch slurry by mixing 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 1/4 cup cold water until smooth.
  7. Pour the teriyaki sauce over the browned turkey and stir well; let simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Slowly add the cornstarch slurry while stirring continuously to thicken the sauce over 1-2 minutes.
  9. If desired, add 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes while stirring.
  10. Serve the teriyaki turkey mixture over cooked rice and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
