Preparation
- In a large mixing bowl, combine your ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, and seasonings. Mix gently until combined.
- Shape the mixture into meatballs about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
- Set them aside on a plate while you prepare to cook.
Cooking the Meatballs
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a splash of olive oil.
- Once the oil is hot, gently place the meatballs in the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes until browned.
- Remove the meatballs and set aside.
Caramelizing the Onions
- In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium-low and add more olive oil and sliced onions. Cook for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Optional: After 10 minutes, sprinkle in sugar to enhance sweetness.
Making the Sauce
- Pour in the beef broth to deglaze the pan and simmer for 5-10 minutes until sauce thickens.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet and let them simmer for another 5 minutes to absorb flavors.
Adding Cheese and Serving
- Preheat the broiler to high and top the meatballs with shredded Gruyère cheese.
- Broil for 2-3 minutes until cheese is melty and golden. Serve warm.
