Ingredients
  

For the Meatballs
  • 1 pound Ground Beef can substitute with ground turkey or chicken
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs can replace with crushed crackers or gluten-free alternative
  • 1 large Egg acts as a binder
For the Sauce
  • 2 large Onions yellow onions preferred
  • 2 cups Beef Broth can substitute with vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar optional for sweetness
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil use extra for cooking onions
For the Topping
  • 1 cup Gruyère Cheese can substitute with Swiss or Fontina

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine your ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, and seasonings. Mix gently until combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into meatballs about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
  3. Set them aside on a plate while you prepare to cook.
Cooking the Meatballs
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a splash of olive oil.
  2. Once the oil is hot, gently place the meatballs in the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes until browned.
  3. Remove the meatballs and set aside.
Caramelizing the Onions
  1. In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium-low and add more olive oil and sliced onions. Cook for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Optional: After 10 minutes, sprinkle in sugar to enhance sweetness.
Making the Sauce
  1. Pour in the beef broth to deglaze the pan and simmer for 5-10 minutes until sauce thickens.
  2. Return the meatballs to the skillet and let them simmer for another 5 minutes to absorb flavors.
Adding Cheese and Serving
  1. Preheat the broiler to high and top the meatballs with shredded Gruyère cheese.
  2. Broil for 2-3 minutes until cheese is melty and golden. Serve warm.
